Modern British Values

British Values at High Street

We follow the Department for Education guidance on promoting 'British values' in all that we do.  The guidance explains that we must promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We are required to have a clear strategy for embedding these values and we have used staff meetings to explore the concept of British Values and how we can ensure that we are fulfilling our duties.

Before the guidance was sent out to schools we were already meeting many of the points through our curriculum and our school behaviour policy. We have always wanted our pupils to have opportunities to develop as individuals and become well rounded community members. We have always encouraged our pupils to be respectful and tolerant of each other no matter what they individual belief or faith they are. Our city has changed and there is much diversity on many levels. We understand the need to teach our pupils about democracy, how the law works and liberty.

We agree that it is part of our role as educators, to ensure that our pupils leave school ready for life in modern Britain.  The way we will do this is through our curriculum particularly in Personal Social Cultural and Health Education (PSCHE) and Religious Education (RE) lessons, through school assemblies and through themed weeks where pupils work on projects which are cross curricular.
