Speech and Language Provision
My name is Natalie Lilley. I am a Speech and Language Therapist and work with children at High Street Primary Academy on Wednesdays every week. I can work with children from Nursery through to Year 6 who need help with a wide range of needs, some of which include:
- Saying the right speech sounds
- Understanding instructions
- Learning and remembering new words
- Understanding and answering ‘wh’ questions such as ‘who’, ‘where’ and ‘when questions
- Attention and listening
- Putting pictures in the right order and using them to tell a story
- Putting pictures into groups e.g. apples and crisps are types of food
I can see children on their own or in small groups. Sometimes I will design a programme of work for your child to do and it will be completed by staff in school although I would always ask you to reinforce this at home too. I tell the teachers and the classroom staff what I am working on with your child so they can continue to practice what we are working on in class. I work closely with all the different professionals who may be working with your child e.g. Educational Psychologists or Communication Interaction Team.
When children start in Foundation they take part in a language screen. This screen has fun activities and lasts about 10-15 minutes which children enjoy doing. This screen shows us if they need any help with their; speech sounds, following longer instructions, speaking in sentences, putting pictures in the right order to tell a story, position words (e.g. under) and size words (e.g. small). They may need some help from myself 1:1 or they may need a ‘boost’ of their skills in a group. We will write a letter to let you know if your child needs any help. The group activities are made by myself and run by classroom staff.
There are links to different websites which can give you more information about speech and language and some have ideas for games you can play with your children to help their speech and language skills.
If you would like a chat with me, you can arrange a meeting by contacting Mrs Sanders, Special Educational Needs Coordinator, in the first instance.
